  2. Is it justifiable to break a traffic signal when the need to do so is greater than following the law (Just for that time)

For example, is running a red light okay if you are on your way to help someone who needs immediate attention?

  3. i think it is justifiable to do so, if and only if u dont have any other option left.. clear example is an ambulance... in emergency they can cross red signal..

  4. i want to ask sir that: why is it unethical to break traffic signal in midnight (e.g. around 2 or 3 am) when nobody is getting harmed? as the sole purpose of these traffic signals is to keep us safe from any accident.

Also there is chance of you getting robbed.

  5. It maybe justifiable to break the traffic rule if you are rushing because of an emergency somewhere (utilitarian aspect i believe; ends justifying the means?) but the traffic police is out there to manage traffic and see that traffic rules are followed. How are they supposed to know if a person really does need to rush for somewhere or that they are merely coming up with stories?

  6. In my opinion breaking a law in any case is not ethical, ambulance is an xceptional thing becuse its the matter of life and death but other than that i dnt thnk we need to do so, but the reality is almost all of us break the traffic signal when 90% of the time thr is no emergency.

  8. Breaking or violating any law under any circumstances is equally punishable. Laws are not made to be broken, they are there to be abide by every citizen no matter what circumstances you might be facing. Be it an emergency or a casual reason for breaking a law, it should be punished by the law enforces. I firmly believe a society will never flourish if the laws are not being followed correctly. What we need is a solid foundation of law enforcing agencies that will out perform the existing ones and ensure that justice is served, even if the felony is as minor as breaking a traffic light.

  9. i think that breaking laws in any situation is not ethical, because if we break law in any situation then laws will not be worth while.Even at late night when there are no cars on road we shouldnt break signal as any thing can happen of what we are not aware.

But in situations when it is the matter of life or dead then signal can be broken as utilitarian principlle say action that is most good and least harm that increases social benefit and decreases social cost, so according to utilitarian signal can be broken.Thats why ambulance can break signal.

  11. I too think that breaking a traffic signal is not ethical, no matter what the circumstance is. But according to the utilitarian principle, as mentioned by others as well, it is OK to break the signal if the person thinks that it can have greater benefit or positive consequence and can protect the person from any harm.

But the question remains, what if everyone starts to defend their breaking of signal by giving reasons that they were protecting themselves from harm. It is a duty of every citizen to follow these laws which are made for our sake only, and doing this we can make ourselves better citizens and can also make others to follow them. A person cannot teach others unless he practice the laws himself.

  12. In my opinion breaking a traffic signal is justified in cases like emergency situations for the police and for ambulance drivers where it is a life and death situation. This is in accordance with the Utilitarian principle where the social benefits are greater than the social costs.

In other situations, breaking traffic signals is highly condemnable. It is not justified and constitutes unethical practice and should be avoided at all costs.

Following traffic rules will not only benefit us, but also preserve the "right to live" of others.
